The Importance of Youth Sports

I was surprised to learn that 70% of the kids in youth sports quit by age 13.  And the number one reason is that it's not fun anymore.

I wonder how many great athletes we have lost over the years, and how many kids have turned to destructive behaviors, because they've given up on sports.  Not that sports are always the answer, but they do provide character-building opportunities and can feed healthy relationships.

Here's a good NCAA video feature on the importance of youth sports, with Congressman Mike McIntyre of North Carolina.  He coached his sons in youth sports, so he has a strong interest in improving this area.

i'd be interested to know, for those kids who dropped out of youth sports, why it wasn't fun for them anymore?

That's a good question. The video provides some good insights. While not answering that question in detail, it does shed some light. I'd be interested in hearing from others on that question-- why do so many kids quit by age 13?
