Myth #1: If I'm good enough, the coaches will find me.
A very small number of recruited athletes are just "found" by the coaches. The vast majority have to take the initiative to contact the coaches.

Myth #2:   My high school coach will get me an athletic scholarship.
Few high school coaches have either the time or knowledge to take charge of your son or daughter's recruiting. You have to take charge on this.

Myth #3:   I'd have to be the best athlete on my team to get a scholarship.
Even if they're not a national superstar already being recruited, an accomplished, talented athlete has a great chance of being recruited. But they have to let the coaches know about themselves in the right way.

Myth #4:   I can wait until my senior year to look for an athletic scholarship.
The recruiting process takes time, so you need to start early. Best plan is to begin contacting coaches when your athlete has Varsity stats to show - usually by their sophomore or junior year. You want to get them on the coaches' radar as early as possible.

Myth #5:   Coaches resent being contacted by prospective athletes.
On the contrary, coaches hope to hear from good athletes who are interested in their program. Some blue-chip athletes come to their attention naturally, but there aren't enough of them for a coach to fill his or her roster.

Myth #6:   Only the money sports like football and basketball have athletic scholarships.
NCAA and NAIA schools give scholarships in almost every established sport.

Not only is it OK, but they hope for it. Put yourself in the coach's position. Every year his most experienced athletes graduate. Every year he has to recruit a new crop of rising athletes. He has to be constantly recruiting - and planning ahead - to keep the team roster filled. He's busy coaching, and doesn't have the time or budget to discover every promising athlete on his own. Some blue-chip athletes come to his attention, but there aren't enough of them to fill his roster AND there's lots of competition for them. So coaches want to hear from interested prospects. Our sons were recruited to play baseball at the Air Force Academy, which is why that figure is so high. (By the way, that's my son batting below). But even at a public university we would have saved $40,000-$70,000 for each son. At a private school the savings would have easily been $100,000 per son over the 4 years.

In most sports at most schools, partial scholarships are the norm. That allows more athletes to receive some amount of aid and dramatically increases your chances.

Would $20,000, $40,000, $100,000 a year make a difference to you? It may seem like a dream, but it is attainable. It paid for both of my sons' education. And for many other families, it could be the only way a college education will happen. That sure was our case.

So if your athlete loves their sport, is an excellent athlete, and is willing to play in exchange for a scholarship, it's worth pursuing the dream!
